Screening Oregon Sunstone

175 US dollars
4100 Cameron Park Drive

Service Description

The art of screening Oregon Sunstone is an engaging blend of geology, craftsmanship, and patience. Each student will receive a sack of Oregon material brought from the mine. The class begins with a brief lecture on the unique qualities of Oregon Sunstone, its formation, and how to identify it. This gemstone is known for its captivating colors, ranging from transparent to warm hues like orange, red, and green. Students are given samples of rough Oregon Sunstone to familiarize themselves with the raw material. They learn to recognize the tell-tale glitter of copper inclusions and the play of color that makes this gem unique. The Screening Process: A Slow and Methodical Art Gathering Raw Material: Students collect a sack of raw material; this step can include working with soil or gravel that contains hidden Oregon Sunstone pieces, adding an element of discovery. Layered Sifting: You will learn to stack and shake screens with varying mesh sizes, from larger to finer ones. This creates a visual and tactile experience as they separate stones from debris, teaching attention to detail and patience. Water Screening for Clarity: Students' wet screening using water to highlight the sunstone's transparency and color, showing how even subtle inclusions or colors can make a piece valuable. Prerequisite: None The minimum class is 2, and the maximum is 6. If the minimum class is not met, it might be rescheduled. The class is approximately 4 to 5 hours long.
