Service Description

Faceting 101: Intro/Beginning (THIS IS A ONE-TO-ONE PRIVATE CLASS) ** Introduction to Gemstone Faceting for Jewelry Making ** This practical course is designed for beginners eager to learn the art of faceting gemstones for handcrafted jewelry. Over the course of six hours, participants will learn how to transform rough gemstones into exquisite, polished stones, ready for jewelry settings. No prior experience is required, though some basic knowledge of jewelry or gemstones may be beneficial. The course begins with a detailed overview of faceting tools, highlighting the components and functions of a faceting machine. Participants will explore various types of gem rough suitable for faceting, understand how light interacts with faceted stones, and identify the best options for their initial project. Essential safety protocols and best practices for equipment handling will also be discussed in the first session. As the course continues, students will practice dopping, a technique for securing a stone onto the faceting machine, and begin carving the pavilion, or the gemstone's lower half. They will be introduced to basic facet diagrams and learn to align the stone accurately. Utilizing materials such as quartz or synthetic cubic zirconia, participants will refine the pavilion under step- by- step instructions. Once the pavilion is finished, students will learn to shift the stone to carve the crown, or upper half of the gem. This process includes defining the girdle, shaping the crown facets, and preparing the stone for polishing. Techniques for polishing and various polishing compounds will be demonstrated as students work to enhance the brilliance of the stones. In the final segment, participants will refine their work, evaluate their completed gems, and learn to identify and address common flaws. The course concludes with a showcase of student work and a discussion on setting the finished stone into jewelry, along with optional guidance for simple pendant or ring settings. All necessary materials are included in the materials fee, covering practice gem rough, dop wax or glue, diagrams, and shared use of a faceting machine. Students should bring a notebook and wear comfortable clothing or an apron. Enthusiasm, patience, and meticulousness are vital for success in this class.
